Racing! Owning a thoroughbred teaches you a lot about how much people care for these horses
- Share via
Hello, my name is
I’m in my early months and experiences as a first-time thoroughbred owner, and I can say without a doubt how devoted people are to making sure these horses are kept safe and healthy. A cough, an awkward step, a failure to eat food — the trainers and their assistants are watching out for anything. They check for bleeding after workouts, order blood tests and closely monitor behavior and habits.
Brave Helios, a 2-year-old son of Artie Schiller whom I own with handicapper and TV commentator Jeff Siegel, has lost very little training time since he began training last April, but twice after van rides from Golden Gate to
Even though he was staying in the barn of Mike Machowsky at Santa Anita as a courtesy to our Golden Gate trainer, Jedd Josephson, Machowsky’s assistant came in at 4 a.m. Sunday, saw Brave Helios was coughing and quickly alerted the vet. I had no idea how dedicated the staff is in taking care of these massive four-legged athletes.
We decided to scratch Brave Helios on Monday morning from the Zuma Stakes at Santa Anita. Gone went $500 for the entry fee. He was 30-1 on the morning line, but I was already making plans for the custom surfboard that goes to the winning owner. I’m learning that the fees add up, but I have a feeling Brave Helios is going to be a very good turf horse. You’ll see him hopefully at Del Mar next month.
Who deserves the next statue at Santa Anita?
If you ever have some time, you should take a tour of the statues at Santa Anita. The most iconic one is the life-size bronze statue of the great Seabiscuit, in the horse walking ring of the paddock gardens. It was unveiled in 1941. Seabiscuit was horse of the year in 1938.
In 2012, a statue of Zenyatta was unveiled in the paddock gardens. She was the 2010 horse of the year and won 19 of 20 starts. In 2009, Santa Anita added a life-size statue of John Henry, a Hall of Fame gelding who was trained by Ron McAnally and earned a then leading $6,591,860 until retirement in 1985.
Around the gardens, there are statues of jockeys George Woolf, Johnny Longden, Bill Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay Jr. and Chris McCarron, plus trainer Charlie Whittingham and racing announcer Joe Hernandez.
The big question is who deserves the next statue? Should it be trainer
Watch out for Concur
Rising trainer Phil D’Amato has always wanted to produce top 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds to get into the Kentucky Derby picture. He has a promising 2-year-old in Concur, who is nearing his first start. A son of Curlin, Concur cost $500,000 at the OBSMAR March sale. The owners are the same twosome, Anthony Fanticola and Joseph Scardino, that owned Obviously for D’Amato. Concur had a five-furlong work on Sunday in 1:00.80, the second fastest of 50.
Gormley retired
World’s No. 1 trainer
Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien is always good, but this year he’s close to unstoppable. His horses have won 23 Group One victories through Oct. 7. Sixteen of the wins came from horses sired by the great Galileo.
Santa Anita videoboard update
Another day, another outage for part of the infield videoboard at Santa Anita that lists the odds for horses. All of No. 1 and part of No. 2 is malfunctioning for the third consecutive day. Maybe a call to Caltech or a 17-year-old with an iPhone 8 will help. The track has until Friday’s card to figure out a solution.
Monday’s focus on 2-year-olds
My Boy Jack, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, broke his maiden with a victory in the $100,000 Zuma Stakes for 2-year-olds at a mile on the turf at Santa Anita. The big plus was not running against Encumbered, the horse My Boy Jack had finished second to in consecutive turf races. He’ll next seek an appearance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar. Here’s video of the race.
In the companion $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, Moon Dash and Fatale Bere had a stirring stretch duel, with Fatale Bere prevailing by a nose. Desormeaux swept the two stakes races.
