Letters: Opie’s friends
Re “Mayberry’s folksy sheriff,” Obituary, July 4
When my son was little, he caught his first glimpse of “The Andy Griffith Show.” He stopped to watch the little kid on the screen. “Who’s that?” he asked. “That’s Opie,” I said. He asked, “Can I play with him?”
It hit me then that what Griffith helped create wasn’t just a show, it was a real place — a place we all wanted to visit and did over the years. We all sat in Floyd’s barber chair. We all shared stories on the porch with Andy and Barney, and we all played with Opie.
