Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka marry in Italy: Here are the details
After more than 10 years together, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka tied the knot with a destination wedding in Italy this weekend.
Pam Fryman, who directed nearly every episode of “How I Met Your Mother,” officiated at the ceremony, and Elton John performed at the reception, according to Harris’ publicist.
The TV and Broadway star, 41, and actor-chef Burtka, 39, sported custom Tom Ford tuxedos.
Wedding guest Kelly Ripa dished about the “very quiet, very private, very family affair” at a castle in the city of Perugia on her talk show “Live with Kelly and Michael.”
She said the event featured fireworks and magic tricks (not too surprising, given Harris’ longtime passion for magic).
The couple’s nearly 4-year-old twins, Harper and Gideon, had special roles to play. As Ripa explained, “Harper was going to be the flower girl and Gideon was going to be the ring bearer, and he said, ‘I don’t want to be the ring bearer,’ and they said, ‘OK, what do you want to be?’ and he said, ‘I want to be the orange boy’” -- a job he apparently had dreamed up.
Harris and Burtka went with it, she said: Gideon, in a tux and top hat, handed out oranges to guests as he walked down the aisle.
This has been a busy year for Harris: He finished the ninth and final season of “How I Met Your Mother” and wrapped up his Tony-winning run on Broadway starring in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” A few weeks ago he sang at the Emmys, and the normally comedic actor is stretching with a creepy-looking role in the film “Gone Girl,” which opens next month.
The couple’s wedding has been a long time coming. The pair got together in 2004, and they welcomed their twins in October 2010.
When New York legalized same-sex marriage in 2011, the pair celebrated by revealing that they had long been engaged. “David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago!” Harris tweeted. “We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date.”
Well, that date has arrived.
