Honorary Oscar for art director
Robert Boyle, who got his start in the movie business as an extra and went on to earn four Oscar nominations as an art director, will be given an honorary Academy Award at the 80th annual film ceremonies Feb. 24.
Boyle, 98, an L.A. native who studied to be an architect before getting into film work, collaborated on many Alfred Hithcock films, including “Saboteur,” “The Birds,” “Marnie” and “North by Northwest,” the latter earning him his first Oscar nomination. The others were for “Gaily, Gaily,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Shootist.”
Among the scores of other films on which he served as art director were “In Cold Blood,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “Rhinestone,” “Portnoy’s Complaint,” “It Came From Outer Space,” “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Private Benjamin.”
