Berlin film awards hail ‘Lenin’
The poignant comedy “Goodbye Lenin!” scored a hometown triumph at the 16th European Film Awards in Berlin, winning the prizes for best film, best actor (Daniel Bruhl) and best screenwriter (Bernd Lichtenberg). The Wolfgang Becker film deals with the effects of the fall of communism on a Berlin family.
Britain’s Charlotte Rampling won best actress for her performance in “Swimming Pool.”
Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier was named best director for “Dogville,” a dark drama with Nicole Kidman that was lighted by Anthony Dod Mantle, winner of the prize for best cinematographer.
Votes were cast by 1,600 members of the European Film Academy from 47 countries.
