Hewlett Foundation Gives Grant to PBS’ ‘NewsHour’
The Public Broadcasting Service’s nightly newscast, “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer” got some breathing room in the form of a $1.6-million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in Menlo Park.
The program had been facing a constricted financial future after losing one of its two corporate financial underwriters--the Citigroup units, Travelers Insurance and Salomon Smith Barney--in September, as a result of the uncertain economy.
The grant is less than the $5-million annual underwriting commitment the program had been seeking but will tide it over through the end of the year.
