Avenida d’Art

How often do you get to shop with an ocean view? Every month, if you attend the San Clemente Village Arts and Crafts Fair.

Sunday and the first Sunday of each month from March through December, 4,000 to 5,000 people tromp down the sidewalks of Avenida del Mar, between El Camino Real and Ola Vista.

So, what’s there?

Jewelry, ceramics, clothing, limited-edited art, soda cans converted into airplanes. Get the idea?

“Anything from florals and small wooden objects to large fine-art oils and multicultural art,” says Sue Jasper, who manages the event for the Downtown Business Assn. “All items are previewed by a committee to assure that they are handcrafted by an artist.”

Most of the 100 artisans who display their work return each month, but creative types passing through town may be able to reserve a space along the curb by calling (714) 366-0978.

“We’re looking for more space to house these fine art displays,” she says. “It’s hard to turn people down.”

The shops and cafes on Del Mar are open during the craft show, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. There is parking on the streets and in lots behind the shops.

“Some people start selling at 9 a.m.,” says Jasper. “Come early and enjoy the day.”
