Yankee Pitchers Sign New Deals

Pitchers Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera, keys to the New York Yankees’ championship run last season, signed one-year contracts with the team. Pettitte, 21-8 with a 3.87 ERA, signed for $600,000. Rivera signed for $550,000.
Derek Jeter, the AL rookie of the year, had his contract renewed at a figure to be determined after the shortstop rejected an offer of $450,000.

Right-hander Ken Hill will make his second consecutive opening-day start for the Texas Rangers. . . . Roberto Alomar has thrown away the crutches and is now throwing without pain. If his sprained left ankle cooperates, he could be back in a Baltimore Oriole uniform by the end of next week. . . . An exhibition between the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies scheduled for March 16 at Culiacan, Mexico, was canceled.
