Vengerov Listed in Center ‘96-97 Chamber Series

COSTA MESA —  Siberian-born violinist Maxim Vengerov, who made a splash at this year’s Grammy Awards playing music by Shostakovich, will conclude the Orange County Performing Arts Center’s 1996-97 Chamber Music Series, the center announced this week.

All performances will be at 8 p.m. in Founders Hall except as indicated. The series:

* Oct. 10: Lydian String Quartet, based at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., plays works by Haydn and Beethoven and gives the local premiere of John Harbison’s Quartet No. 3.

* Nov. 19: Shanghai Quartet, founded at the Shanghai Conservatory and currently ensemble-in-residence at the University of Richmond, Va., plays works by Haydn and Ravel and gives the West Coast premiere of Zhou Long’s “Poems From Tang.”

* Jan. 17 (8 p.m., players and audience on Segerstrom Hall stage): New York-based American String Quartet, joined by members of the Angeles Quartet, plays Bartok’s Quartet No. 3 and quintets by Mozart (in D) and Schubert (in C).

* Feb. 9 (11 a.m., Founders Hall): Ensemble Wien, founded by two violinists, a violist and a double bassist from the Vienna Philharmonic, presents a “Viennese Cafe Concert” including morning pastries and light classics, polkas, waltzes and Gypsy music by composers including the Strausses, Von Suppe, Mozart and Beethoven.

* April 11: Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, with former Pacific Symphony concertmaster Sheryl Staples, plays Mendelssohn’s Piano Quartet in D minor and Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor. 8 p.m.

* April 23 (8 p.m., Segerstrom Hall): Vengerov. Program to be announced.
