BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Ozzie Smith Out for 6-8 Weeks

Shoulder surgery on 40-year-old shortstop Ozzie Smith Wednesday was described as a success by St. Louis Cardinal doctors and he is expected to sit out six to eight weeks. . . . The Montreal Expos put second baseman Mike Lansing on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of veteran Tom Foley from triple-A Ottawa. . . . Minnesota outfielder Alex Cole is expected the sit out the rest of the season after surgery to repair a dislocated right ankle and a broken right fibula. Cole was hurt when his spikes got caught in the grass in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s game at Milwaukee.
