THE BOWLS DAILY REPORT : COTTON : USC, Texas Tech Both Have the Horses
- Share via
It’ll be a two-horse Cotton Bowl Monday.
Texas Tech and USC have hoofed mascots, although Texas Tech’s Two Bar Boy is the Red Raiders’ interim mascot. Their previous steed, Double-T, hit his head during a game and died.
The Trojans’ Traveler IV will be trucked to Dallas this week, and rider Tom Nolan will have the white Arabian dash about the Cotton Bowl every time USC scores.
Texas Tech followers went into shock at what happened during the Sept. 3 New Mexico game at Lubbock. Double-T’s rider, Amy Smart, fell off the coal-black horse when her saddle cinch broke.
Double-T bolted, ran riderless across the end zone, then made a sudden turn to gallop up the stadium ramp. He ran head-first into a concrete abutment and died instantly.
Texas Tech will shop for a black quarter horse in the off-season, and will probably name the successor Double-T II.
