A 15-year-old boy was shot in the back Thursday at a high school campus in Whittier, the apparent victim of a gang attack, police said.
The shooting happened shortly after 4 p.m. when a group of youths in a car drove up to the victim as he stood on a playing field at Frontier High School, Whittier Police Lt. Dave Carlisle said .
Witnesses told police that one of the youths shouted gang names at the victim before shooting him with a .380-caliber handgun. The group fled in the car, which was found abandoned about an hour later in the 13500 block of Virginia Avenue just outside the city limits, Carlisle said.
Police arrested the owner of the vehicle in connection with the shooting. Arturo Jimenez, 18, of Whittier was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
The victim was taken by helicopter to Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center. No details of his condition were immediately available, a nursing supervisor said.
