NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Rockies Don’t Get Justice in Front of Millionth Fan

David Justice homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs at Denver as the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies, 12-7, to complete a four-game sweep.

The Rockies drew their 1-millionth fan in their 17th home date, quickest in history, surpassing the Toronto Blue Jays’ mark of 21 dates, set last year. A crowd of 70,786 gave the Rockies an average attendance of 59,863.

Atlanta won for the sixth time in seven games. The Rockies’ losing streak reached five, and they lost their sixth in a row at Mile High Stadium despite outhitting the Braves, 14-11.

Andres Galarraga, hitting .395, had two hits for Colorado before leaving because of a strained right hamstring.

Greg McMichael (1-1) pitched three innings for his first major-league victory. Braves’ starter Tom Glavine gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Steve Reed (1-2) gave up five runs in one-plus inning.

Philadelphia 6, St. Louis 5--Mariano Duncan hit a grand slam in the eighth inning against Lee Smith at Philadelphia to lift the Phillies.

St. Louis led, 5-2, going into the bottom of the eighth.

Bob Tewksbury retired the first two batters, but Darren Daulton singled and Wes Chamberlain doubled. Smith (0-1) relieved and walked Thompson before Duncan’s homer.

Mark Davis (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Mitch Williams worked the ninth for his 13th save.

Florida 6, New York 4--The Mets lost for the 11th time in their last 13 games as Walt Weiss had three hits and drove in two runs at New York.

The loss dropped the last-place Mets three games behind the expansion Marlins.

Chris Hammond (2-3) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings for the victory. Bryan Harvey got the last three outs for his 10th save.

Met starter Frank Tanana (2-2) was hit hard, giving up six runs and nine hits in three-plus innings.

Houston 6, Cincinnati 3--Pete Harnisch struck out 10 in seven innings to lead the Astros at Houston.

Houston scored five runs against Cincinnati starter Tim Pugh (2-3) in the first inning.

Harnisch (3-1) did not allow a baserunner in the first three innings.

Doug Jones pitched a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save.

Pittsburgh 6, Montreal 5--Andy Van Slyke, who hit a two-run homer earlier for the Pirates at Pittsburgh, singled in the winning run in the 11th inning as John Wetteland blew a ninth-inning lead for the second successive game.

Montreal took a 5-3 lead into the ninth, in which rookie Al Martin hit a two-out pinch-hit homer against Jeff Shaw and Jay Bell doubled in the tying run against Wetteland.

Blas Minor (4-0) worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the top of the 11th before Lloyd McClendon walked and was balked to second by Brian Barnes (1-1), who gave up Van Slyke’s single after walking Bell intentionally.

San Diego 5, Chicago 4--Mark Grace hit for the cycle at Chicago, but it wasn’t enough as the Padres got homers by Fred McGriff and Bob Geren.

Grace hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to complete the cycle. He also doubled in the first, singled in the third and tripled in the seventh.

Greg Harris (2-5) broke a personal three-game losing streak.

Jose Guzman fell to 3-3.
