FAIRPLEX : Easter Buggy Is Winner of Handicap
- Share via
Easter Buggy duplicated his performance of victory in the First Down Dash Handicap eight days earlier by winning Sunday’s $50,000 Pomona Quarter Horse Championship Invitational Handicap at Fairplex Park.
The victory continued a brilliant Fairplex season for trainer H.J. Visscher, who has won with four of six starters, including the two stakes scores by Easter Buggy.
The three-year-old gelding went off at 11-1 from the outside of a field that included Isaws Sugar Bear and heavily-favored Sweeten The Pot, a winner of five in a row.
But Easter Buggy and jockey Eddie Garcia were away quickly and established the early lead in the 400-yard event. Only Reeds Signature was able to make a race of it late, winding up a neck behind the winner, who was clocked in 19.78 seconds.
Easter Buggy paid $24.80 to win.
In the thoroughbred feature, Mystery’s Edge won the $50,000 C.B. Afflerbaugh Stakes for three-year-olds and up.
Mystery’s Edge, ridden by David Flores, covered the 1 1/6-mile distance in 1:42 3/5 and paid $6.40, $4.80, and $4.
Lackington finished second and Journalism was third.
