COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Secondary Should Get Nickel’s Worth

UCLA’s secondary wasn’t tested in the Bruins’ 37-14 season-opening victory over Cal State Fullerton because the Titans attempted only four passes. The Bruins didn’t get to use their nickel--five-back--defense.

However, they should get plenty of work in Saturday’s game against Brigham Young, which is averaging 341 yards per game and ranks sixth in the nation in passing.

“I’d like to have a little bit more action than I did last week,” cornerback Carlton Gray said.

Tailback Kevin Williams might be the best barometer for the Bruins, who are 7-0 when Williams rushes for 100 yards or more.

Williams, who led the Pacific 10 Conference in rushing last season, had 124 yards in 23 carries in the opener and has rushed for at least 100 yards in seven of his last 11 regular-season games.

Senior defensive end Mike Chalenski had a career-high nine tackles, including one sack, in the Bruins’ opener. . . . UCLA has given up more than two touchdowns only twice in its last nine games. . . . UCLA is trying to go 2-0 for the first time since 1988, when the Bruins opened the season with seven victories. . . . There were 34 former Bruins on NFL opening-day rosters, including quarterbacks Troy Aikman of the Dallas Cowboys, Jay Schroeder of the Raiders, Steve Bono of the San Francisco 49ers and Tommy Maddox of the Denver Broncos. . . . Brigham Young, which had its 17-game home winning streak ended in last week’s 45-38 loss to San Diego State, hasn’t lost two consecutive home games in the same season since 1971, the year before LaVell Edwards became head coach. . . . BYU middle linebackers Shad Hansen (concussion) and Todd Herget (sprained ankle), who were sidelined during the San Diego State game, are expected to play against UCLA.
