THE ARCANE EYE OF HOGARTH by Burne Hogarth (Fantagraphics Books: $34.95). A highly acclaimed comic-strip artist (he took over “Tarzan” in 1937), Hogarth also is the co-founder of the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the author of three popular books on drawing. The warriors, monsters, bulls and horses in this handsome sketchbook showcase his skills as an illustrator and draftsman. Few contemporary artists can match his ability to suggest weight, action and anatomy with a few lines on paper. The artist will make a rare personal appearance today at the San Diego Comicon to sign copies of “The Arcane Eye.”
