“PIECES OF AFRICA.” Kronos Quartet. Elektra Nonesuch 79275-2. This cheerful, freewheeling disc combines Kronos with a variety of African instruments, and even the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, in thoroughly postmodern, mostly folk-based works by Dumisani Maraire, Hassan Hakmoun, Foday Musa Suso, Justinian Tamusuza, Hamza el Din, Obo Addy and Kevin Volans. The performances--many with the composers involved--soar throughout the distinctive, multifaceted program. The listening is remarkably easy for so much reward.
