Budget Crunch: The Detroit Institute of Arts faces weekday closings, cancellation of programs and layoffs if Gov. John Engler approves $6.8 million in funding cuts for the museum. A spokesman for the governor said that the cuts--about a quarter of the institute’s $26 million budget--are a virtual certainty. The state has pitched in $16.4 million annually for the institute since 1982.
