CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs announced today that they have placed reliever Mitch Williams on the 21-day disabled list and recalled left-handed pitcher Joe Kraemer from Iowa of the American Assn.
Williams sprained his right knee in Monday night’s game against the New York Mets on a play at first base. He is the Cubs’ fifth player on the disabled list, joining pitchers Rick Sutcliffe, Mike Harkey and Bill Long and catcher Damon Berryhill.
In 29 appearances this year, Williams has a 1-5 record with 9 saves and a 2.20 ERA.
Kraemer opened the season with the Cubs and was winless with a 4.76 ERA in 12 relief appearances before being optioned to the Iowa last month. He was 3-1 with a 2.60 ERA in his five starts at Iowa.
