THE WEEK’S OTHER PRIME-TIME FILMS

Director Karel Reisz and writer Harold Pinter’s dazzling 1981 The French Lieutenant’s Woman (KTLA, Sunday at 8 p.m.) stars Meryl Streep as an enigmatic Victorian-era beauty who entrances Jeremy Irons’ proper British gentleman. This ravishing, mesmerizing film becomes a wry comment on what has become of personal morality between 1867 and the present.

In The Girl Who Came Between Them, a new TV movie (KNBC, Sunday at 9 p.m.), a vet and his wife bring over his Vietnamese daughter. Cheryl Ladd and Anthony Denison star.

The business-as-usual 1983 James Bond Octopussy (KABC, Sunday at 9 p.m.), starring Roger Moore as 007, features a zealous Soviet general who has hatched a scheme to force Western Europe to surrender to the USSR.

No Man’s Land (KCOP, Monday at 8 p.m.) is a nifty 1987 Faustian tale, in which a sleekly amoral Charlie Sheen beguiles a rookie cop (D.B. Sweeney).

The new TV movie Follow Your Heart (KNBC, Monday at 9 p.m.) stars Patrick Cassidy as a stranded Marine who befriends an old woman (Frances Sternhagen), her retarded son and a Vietnamese girl in a desert town.

Bang the Drum Slowly (KTTV, Wednesday at 8 p.m.) is an affecting and often humorous, but never maudlin, account of how a glib, fast-talking pitcher (Michael Moriarty) tries to ensure that the dim but appealing catcher (Robert De Niro) will be able to play until Hodgkin’s disease overtakes him.

Agatha (KTTV, Friday at 8 p.m.) is based on Kathleen Tynan’s novel, which imagined what happened to Agatha Christie during her never-explained 1926 disappearance. This romantic 1979 film casts Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and Dustin Hoffman as a brash American journalist intent on tracking her down.

The elegant 1980 fantasy, Somewhere in Time, (KCOP, Friday at 8 p.m.) finds playwright Christopher Reeve traveling back to 1912 to have a romance with beautiful actress Jane Seymour.

Robert Benton’s funny-sad The Late Show (KCOP, Saturday at 8 p.m.), one of the best films of the ‘70s, stars Art Carney as an aging private eye and Lily Tomlin as a zany Bohemian who try to solve the murder of his ex-partner and the mystery of her missing cat.
