Florida Coaches Implicated

Florida quarterback Kyle Morris, suspended from the team because of gambling charges, said two assistant coaches were aware that he was betting on college games before an anonymous letter arrived at the school alerting other officials of his activities.

Morris, a redshirt freshman, said quarterback coach Bill Cubit and offensive line coach Phil Maggio warned him and backup quarterback Shane Matthews to stop placing wagers “because it didn’t sound like good publicity.”

“They talked to us three or four days before the letter even arrived,” Morris said. “Maggio and Cubit talked to us about the gambling. I don’t know if (Maggio) knew or not whether we were using (a bookie). Right then and there, we knew we were going to stop.”

When contacted, Maggio said: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

After he was told of the implications, Maggio referred all questions to Athletic Director Bill Arnsparger, who refused comment.

“I did not conduct the investigation,” Arnsparger said. “You should talk to the people who are conducting the investigation.”

Officials from the university’s police department, which is conducting he investigation, also refused comment.
