SAN DIEGO SPORTS ET CETERA : San Diego State Upsets Pacific in Volleyball

San Diego State upset third-ranked University of Pacific, 15-8, 15-9, 3-15, 15-9 in a Big West Conference women’s volleyball match at Peterson Gym Thursday night.
The unranked Aztecs (13-12, 3-6) led, 14-3, in the fourth game and held on for the victory over Pacific (17-3, 6-3).
Angela Martin had 20 kills, 15 digs and five service aces, and Amy Erben added 23 kills for the Aztecs.
“I said all year that when we put it together we’re as good as anyone,” Aztec Coach Rudy Suwara said. “This is the biggest win of the year. I just hope we can come back (tonight).”
SDSU plays host to San Jose State in a Big West match tonight at 7:30.
MEN’S TENNIS
The University of San Diego’s Jose Luis Noriega defeated Gilles Ameline of Wake Forest, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round of the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Championships Thursday at Athens, Ga.
Noriega, a sophomore, is seeded fifth and will meet unseeded Jonathan Stark of Stanford today. Stark is a freshman and won the 1989 Junior U.S. Open title. Noriega is ranked No. 6 in the preseason coaches’ rankings and finished No. 17 as a freshman last season.
