CBS News will dispatch two of its regular programs and their big-name anchors to China in May while Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev is visiting there. Dan Rather’s “CBS Evening News” will air from various locations in Beijing May 15-19. Preceding that on May 14 will be a special 90-minute “Sunday Morning” broadcast that Charles Kuralt will anchor from Beijing, the network announced Monday. In February, CBS News used the occasion of Emperor Hirohito’s funeral to originate four of its programs from Japan.
