Johnny Majors, Tennessee football coach, and Doug Dickey, athletic director, quit an all-white Knoxville country club after reports that incoming basketball Coach Wade Houston, who is black, could not become a member.
The president of Cherokee Country Club said no application has been made by Houston or on his behalf.
He acknowledged that the club has no black members.
The university has paid for club memberships, which costs $15,000, for the athletic director, football coach and basketball coach in the past. The school also paid the $225 monthly dues.
