Bids for “Birds of America,” a set of prints by John James Audubon, soared to a record-breaking $1.93 million in New York on Tuesday. The world record sale of the set, known as the “Double Elephant Folio” because of the large size of the 435 plates, was consigned to Christie’s by the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences. All but one of the 435 plates were sold to private collectors or dealers during the seven-hour auction. Two of them went for prices higher than any Audubon plate ever auctioned, a Christie’s spokeswoman said. “Trumpeter Swan” sold for $48,400; “Common American Swan” for $46,200.
