Dukakis Shrugs Off Hairy Experience
BOSTON — It was only 3% of the Boston Globe’s press run, but those 12,000 copies of Tuesday’s paper depicted Gov. Michael S. Dukakis sporting a mustache.
Richard P. Gulla, the Globe’s public affairs manager, said the mustache was scratched on a press plate bearing a photograph of Dukakis that appeared on the first page of the newspaper’s business section. He said the paper was trying to determine who altered the printing plate.
When told of the alteration of his picture as he campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination in Iowa, Dukakis said he was not upset.
“Life is a wonderful mystery,” he said, adding: “I am not considering a mustache. I had one once for about four days.”
