Thousands of Boston Fans Hail Red Sox as Heroes

BOSTON — Thousands of Boston Red Sox fans honored their fallen heroes today in an “appreciation” parade and rally, truly touching team members who came just one out from a World Series title.
“We can’t wait another 11 years,” team captain Jim Rice said, referring to the Red Sox’ last Series appearance in 1975. “Maybe next year or the year after, believe me, we’re gonna do it.”
Mayor Raymond Flynn declared today as Red Sox Appreciation Day, with a parade through downtown and a City Hall rally for the American League champs, who lost to the New York Mets.
Today’s crowd was far smaller than the 250,000 people who honored the Boston Celtics in June after the basketball team won its 16th NBA championship.
An estimated 2.2 million frenzied New York fans turned out Tuesday for the Mets.
