SILENT ‘DON JUAN’ DUE AT ACADEMY
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the introduction of Vitaphone, the first viable synchronous sound system for motion pictures, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Alan Crosland’s “Don Juan,” a silent, DeMille-like swashbuckler that was the first movie with a score recorded on separate sound discs.
A still-slim but world-weary John Barrymore is a perfect Don Juan, pursuing the ravishingly beautiful but innocent Mary Astor. The rich and elegant sets are by the master pioneer art director Ben Carre. Six additional shorts are featured. Phone: (213) 278-8990, ext. 287.
