Was She Amused? : Queen’s Night Out: Stripper, Vulgar Words
ADELAIDE, Australia — Queen Elizabeth II was entertained today by a male stripper and four-letter words at the world premiere of an Australian musical about the Victorian author of “Alice in Wonderland.”
“Boojum,” staged by the State Opera of South Australia, is based on Lewis Carroll’s poem “The Hunting of the Snark.” It deals with the psychosexual conflicts of the Rev. Charles Dodgson, who wrote under the name of Carroll.
Actors who spoke to the queen after the premiere at Adelaide’s Scott Theater said she was delighted.
They insisted that she was not offended by the four-letter Saxon words used by Tweedledum and Tweedledee or by an actor taking off his clothes in his role as a caterpillar.
Waldemar Gorecki said he told the queen: “I hope I didn’t shock you.”
“No, not at all, I enjoyed it very much,” she replied.
“She’s an intelligent lady. I don’t think anything like that would shock her,” the 30-year-old Sydney actor said.
