Brad Gilbert continued his string of upsets in the $315,000 U.S. National Indoor Championships with a 6-3, 6-0 semifinal victory over third-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden Saturday at Memphis, Tenn.

Second-seeded and defending champion Stefan Edberg came from behind to defeat unseeded Mikael Pernfors, also of Sweden, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, in the other semifinal and will play Gilbert in today’s final. Edberg is 3-0 against Gilbert.

Gilbert, who defeated Jimmy Connors, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in Friday’s quarterfinals, had little trouble with Jarryd.

Gilbert, of Piedmont, Calif., broke Jarryd in the second game of the first set only to be broken back in the next game. However, Gilbert managed to break Jarryd once again in the fourth game and won his serve in the fifth game to take a 4-1 lead. He was in control the rest of the way.

In the past month, Gilbert has defeated two of the top four ranked players in the world, upsetting second-ranked John McEnroe last month in the first round of the Nabisco Masters in New York, then beating Connors here Friday night.

Last week in Philadelphia, he lost to No. 1 Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Top-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden overpowered No. 4 Jonathon Canter of Beverly Hills, 7-6, 6-3, in the semifinals of the $145,500 North American Indoor Championships at Toronto.

In today’s final, Nystrom will face unseeded 6-foot-8 Milan Srejber, the tallest player on the men’s pro tour, who upset 6-5 Peter Fleming, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.

Srejber, ranked No. 121 in the world, served 11 aces and was broken just once while dispatching Fleming. Srejber, a pro for only 1 1/2 years and participating in the main draw of his first Grand Prix event, has already guaranteed himself a check exceeding his career earnings of $11,459. The loser of today’s final earns $12,500, with the winner receiving $25,000.

Fourth-seeded Heliane Steden and third-seeded Caroline Kuhlman scored upsets to make it an all-USC women’s final today in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at Houston.
