Forty Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings from the Hermitage in Leningrad and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow will appear at the National Gallery in Washington from May 1 through June 25, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from July 2 through Aug. 26 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from Sept. 3 through Oct. 26.
In return, industrialist Armand Hammer (who orchestrated the U.S.-Soviet art exchange) will send an exhibition of Old Masters from his private collection on a tour of Soviet museums, beginning in March at the Hermitage, then moving on to the Pushkin and to museums in several other cities.
The National Gallery also will show 40 of its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works at the Hermitage from Feb. 1 through April 30.
