Jan Stephenson, a native Australian now living in the United States, rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Alice Miller for the individual title, and the United States also took team honors in the seventh U.S.-Japan women’s golf tournament at Edosaki, Japan.
Miller forced the playoff by firing a final-round 69, tying her at 138 with first-round leader Stephenson, who shot a 72 on the 6,225-yard, par-72, Edosaki Country Club course northeast of Tokyo.
The team victory was the United States’ fifth against two defeats since the event started in 1979.
