USFL Roundup : Flutie Breaks Collarbone as Walker and Generals Beat Showboats, 17-7

Millionaire quarterback Doug Flutie of the New Jersey Generals suffered a broken left collarbone during a 17-7 victory over the Memphis Showboats Saturday night before 45,682 fans at East Rutherford, N.J., and will be sidelined at least two weeks.

Flutie suffered the injury with 12:22 left in the second quarter when he was tackled by Memphis nose tackle Reggie White after rolling out to his left.

“It was a regular hit, I take no pride in it,” said White, a 6-foot-6, 284-pound defensive lineman. “My weight just fell on top of him.”

Flutie, who throws right-handed, returned to the sidelines early in the third quarter dressed in street clothes and watched the game.

“It feels sore, but I am not in any real pain,” Flutie said.

Flutie was replaced at quarterback by Ron Reeves. Flutie hit 1 of 2 passes for 13 yards before being injured.

Herschel Walker again carried the load for the Generals (10-5), rushing for 209 yards on 29 carries, including touchdowns of one and 13 yards.

Walker has rushed for 1,967 yards this season, breaking the USFL single-season mark of 1,812 he set in 1983.
