Daily Deal: L.A.-New Zealand airfare plus car starts at $1,210

Hawaiian Airlines and Tourism New Zealand have teamed up to offer a package starting at $1,210 that covers round-trip airfare, a night’s stay in Auckland and a seven-day car rental. The fare is good from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and other western U.S. cities, but only until the end of the month.

The deal: All About Tours makes reservations for the package that includes:

--Round-trip airfare on Hawaiian Airlines to Auckland, with a stop in Honolulu;
--One night with breakfast at the Copthorne Hotel Auckland HarbourCity;
--Seven days car rental with unlimited mileage.

Note: The airline allows two free checked bags up to 70 pounds each. Reservations are made by phone only, though details and flight schedules are online.

When: Tickets must be purchased by Sept. 30 to take advantage of the offer.

Tested: Travel windows on the deal are now through Oct. 13, Oct. 19 to Dec. 18 and Feb. 23 to April 14.

I called and found availability for an outbound flight from L.A. to Auckland leaving Oct. 30. An 8:40 a.m. departure gets to Honolulu by 11:20 a.m. and then it’s on to a 1:45 p.m. flight to New Zealand, arriving at 9:55 p.m. on Oct. 31. I had several return date options within the travel sale period.

There are lots of booking details to consider with this deal, i.e., do you want to layover in Honolulu for a day or two? Do you want to extend the rental car beyond one week? All this can be finessed -- at additional cost -- when speaking with an agent.
