Paris: Major Manet exhibit to focus on later works

What is being called France’s first major exhibition in nearly 30 years on Impressionist painter Edouard Manet will open April 5 at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.

The exhibit, “Manet, the Man Who Invented Modern Art,” running thorugh July 3, will explore the French artist’s later works through a reconstruction of his seminal 1880 exhibition at the La Vie moderne gallery.

Manet (1832-1883) challenged the preconceptions of artists who preceded him. The new show will explore his approach to the modern and his influence on his contemporaries.

Other themes include his connections to the intellectual world around him, his relationships with female painters such as Berthe Morisot and Eva Gonzales and his attempts to keep his art separate from the main Impressionist movement.
