French Festival
When, where: July 17-18, Oak Park
Highlights: Celebrate Bastille Day at the West’s biggest French celebration. The 23rd annual event draws 20,000 people for entertainment, plenty of French food and drink, artists at their easels, a poodle parade and the chance to win a trip to Paris or Tahiti.

Collegiate Peaks Music Festival
When, where: July 23-24, McPhelemy Park
Highlights: Fort Knox Five and See-I (with members of Thievery Corporation) headline the fifth annual gathering of bands of various genres, including funk and reggae beats, bluegrass and indie- folk music.
Cost: $10; free for children younger than age 12

Spanish Market
When, where: July 24-25, Santa Fe Plaza
Highlights: More than 200 craftspeople converge to display and sell traditional art pieces, including textiles, straw appliqué, furniture, ironwork, pottery, santos and basketry. Also live music, artist demonstrations and regional foods.

BOISE, IDAHO
Jaialdi
When, where: July 27-Aug.1, downtown Boise
Highlights: Idaho has a large Basque community, so every five years the state hosts more than 35,000 people for Jaialdi, a celebration of all things Basque, with cuisine, dance performances, music and strength contests.
Cost: Mostly free, though some events do charge admission
