Cinco de Mayo Festival
When, where: May 1 to 3, Fulton Mall.
Highlights: Live mariachi performances, traditional Mexican folklore dances, crafts, food and a beer garden. Almost 100,000 people attend.

TUCSON
Tucson Folk Festival
When, where: May 2 and 3, El Presidio Park.
Highlights: The Tucson Kitchen Musicians Assn. presents a celebration of folk, blues and gospel music with food, music workshops, craft stands, children’s programs, jam sessions and Grammy-winning headliners.
Cost: Free.

DAVIS, CALIF.
Whole Earth Festival
When, where: May 8 to 10, UC Davis.
Highlights: This volunteer-run festival presents live music, eco-friendly exhibits and products, food, kids’ activities, art, workshops and dance.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF.
A La Carte & Art
When, where: May 16 and 17, Castro Street between Church Street and Evelyn Avenue.
Highlights: This 13th annual event features live music, a juried art show, 250 craftspeople, food, wine, microbrews, a farmers market, chef demos and children’s attractions.

SAN FRANCISCO
ING Bay to Breakers
When, where: May 17, from Mission Street near the Embarcadero through Golden Gate Park to the Great Highway.
Highlights: This 12K is also one of the city’s largest parties. People run it not only in athletic clothes, but also in crazy costumes -- or in nothing at all. Festival floats, alcohol and live music accompany the wild scene.
Cost: Early registration (through April 30) is $44 for adults, $39 for kids younger than 18; standard registration (May 1 to 12) is $48 for adults, $44 for kids; late registration (May 15 and 16) is $55 for adults, $50 for kids.
