The road trip from Moab, Utah, to Ajo, Ariz., is a sunbaked ramble through about 600 miles of dreamy, lethal desert, beginning with the red rocks of Utah’s Arches National Park, skirting Monument Valley and the Colorado River, and ending in the cactus country of southern Arizona.

The route: Oregon 131 from Tillamook to Cape Meares through Oceanside and Netarts, then backtrack south on Oregon 131 and Whiskey Creek Road past Cape Lookout, following Cape Lookout Road and Sandlake Road south to Cape Kiwanda and Pacific City.

The route: From Taos, N.M., take U.S. 64 west to County Road CB-115/Upper Rim Road west, then New Mexico 567 west to U.S. 285 south in Carson.

The route: From Portland, Ore., drive east on Interstate 84, cross the Bridge of the Gods toll bridge to Washington 14 east to Bingen, Wash.
