What a (winter) blast for ski resorts, with more snow — and colder temps — on the way
More snow is in the forecast this weekend at Mammoth Mountain and resorts closer to Los Angeles as California skiers and riders enjoy a holiday period of frequent and generous storms.
The Mammoth forecast calls for snow beginning Friday and lasting through Monday, when the heaviest accumulations are expected. On Sunday, highs in the 30s will give way to colder temps when an Arctic front passes through. Lows are expected to be near 0, or below, by Tuesday and Wednesday. Keep track of current weather conditions here.
On Thursday, all 28 lifts and 151 trails were open at Mammoth, where current bases were 66 to 150 inches (at the top).
Closer to L.A., Mountain High is also enjoying a strong start, with base depths from 10 to 20 inches. The majority of the West Resort is open at the sprawling facility 75 minutes from Los Angeles. Like Mammoth, it is expecting a storm system to move though this weekend, with Friday morning rains turning to snow by noon. Holiday operating hours of 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the West Resort and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the North Pole Tubing Park will be in effect through Jan. 8.
Snow Valley, another popular day-trip L.A. resort, received 2 feet of snow at Christmas, and was bracing for more this weekend.
Rain turning to snow is also expected Friday in Big Bear, where depths ranged from 24 to 36 inches. The three-day forecast calls for snow on Sunday and Monday, with partial clearing on Monday.
