NHL scoring leader Steven Stamkos suffers leg injury

NHL scoring leader Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who is one of the league’s top young stars and was expected to play a key role for Canada at the Sochi Winter Olympics in February, was carried off the ice Monday at Boston’s TD Garden after suffering what appeared to be a serious injury to his right leg.

Stamkos, who has shared or won the NHL goal-scoring lead twice, crashed into the goal post during the second period of the Lightning’s game against the Bruins on Monday. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The Lightning said Stamkos had suffered a broken right tibia and will be out indefinitely. The club did not confirm a report by TSN that Stamkos will require surgery.

Stamkos, 23, shares the league lead in goals with 14 and leads in points, with 23.
