Juergen Klinsmann’s son helps U.S. win youth tournament title
The U.S. under-18 national team won the Vaclav Jezek Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic on Saturday behind a familiar name with Jonathan Klinsmann, son of World Cup Coach Juergen Klinsmann, pitching the shutout in goal.
Mukwelle Akale scored the game’s only goal in the 47th minute and was named the tournament’s top player while Klinsmann was named the top goalkeeper.
Klinsmann, 17, who is entering his senior year at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, trained at the youth academy in Stuttgart -- where his father once played -- before the tournament. He will attend Cal next year.
He was last in the news in May when he sent out a tweet mocking Landon Donovan when the Galaxy forward was cut from the World Cup team.
“HHAHAHAHA DONAVAN HAHAHAHAA,” he wrote. Juergen Klinsmann immediately chastised his son and had him remove the offending tweet and cancel his Twitter account.
Akale, whose father runs a soccer school in the Minneapolis area, has signed a contract to play for Spanish club Villarreal when he turns 18 in January.
