Angels’ Fernando Cabrera running out of time to impress

PHOENIX -- Right-hander Fernando Cabrera, a nonroster invitee, might have hurt his chances to make the Angels’ opening-day roster by choosing to pitch for his native Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

Cabrera pitched only 3 1/3 innings with the Angels -- giving up four runs and five hits -- before leaving camp.

He’s pitched well in the WBC, earning two saves in three scoreless appearances, but he’s thrown just 1 1/3 additional innings, giving him a spring total of 4 2/3.

And with Puerto Rico in the semifinals, Cabrera may not return to Arizona until Wednesday, a week before the Angels break camp.

“When he comes back we’ll have time to take a look at him,” Scioscia said of the 31-year-old, who has appeared in 132 big-league games for Cleveland, Baltimore and Boston.

“We’re running out of innings here for a lot of guys, and we want guys to move forward and be part of that depth chart as we get into the opening of the season. Cabrera definitely will have an opportunity to see where he is and move into our depth chart, and we’ll go from there.”
