Football: Baseline League agrees to revise all-league team

The Baseline League has agreed to add players from Upland High to its all-league football teams after the coaches met two weeks ago and did not include a single Upland player even though Upland went 5-0 and won the league championship. The principals voted Wednesday to make the changes.

Upland officials asked the league to revise the teams. On offense, 11 Upland players will be added and 10 on defense. None, however, will be considered for the player of the year awards. The final decision will stand.

“There is no excuse for personality conflicts or professional differences between coaches to interfere with the student-athlete experience. When it does, as happened here, we need to do everything within our power to correct that and prevent it from happening again,” Nancy Kelly, Upland Unified School District Superintendent, said in a statement after Wednesday’s vote to add Upland players to the first and second all-league teams.

“Reconsidering players for all-league teams, but not for the player of the year awards, doesn’t make sense,” Kelly said.

Complicating the all-league process was the decision of Upland Coach Tim Salter to leave the meeting early on when one of his nominations failed to win the offensive player of the year vote.
