Boys’ basketball: Matt Mitchell, Jemarl Baker lead Roosevelt past Corona Centennial

Eastvale Roosevelt’s dynamic duo of Matt Mitchell, headed to Cal State Fullerton, and Jemarl Baker, headed to Cal, came through with huge performances on Thursday night to help the Mustangs take a major step toward winning the Big VIII League championship with a second victory over Corona Centennial, 71-65, at Roosevelt.
Roosevelt (14-6, 6-0) received 31 points from Mitchell and 23 points from Baker. Gio Nelson and Isom Butler each scored 18 points for Centennial (17-6, 4-2), which fell two games behind Roosevelt.
In the Gold Coast League, Sierra Canyon is 18-1 after a 94-54 win over Brentwood. Marvin Bagley III scored 21 points. Charley Wadler led Brentwood with 25 points, including seven threes. Windward defeated Viewpoint, 77-33. Jules Bernard scored 30 points in three quarters. Freshman Devin Tillis had 14 points and made four of six threes.
Rancho Mirage (20-3) defeated Desert Hot Springs, 79-22. It’s the third straight 20-win season for the Rattlers. Bryan Talley had 22 points.
Rolling Hills Prep defeated New Roads, 86-45. Alex Garcia and Chris Koon each scored 20 points.
University defeated Price, 85-55. Jude Agbasi scored 19 points and Richard Wilson 16.
