When the going got tough, Sylmar turned to 6-foot-8 Devenir Duruisseau and 6-4 Chance Cole, and they sparked the Spartans to a 63-54 victory ove Sun Valley Poly on Monday night in a City Section Division II semifinal game at Kennedy.
With Sylmar (23-11) clinging to a 27-25 halftime lead, Duruisseau decided to assert himself in the third quarter, and Poly (22-9) had no answer for him. He scored seven points en route to a 19-point performance. Cole also finished with 19 points, eight coming in the fourth quarter to help prevent a Poly comeback bid.
Sal Gonzalez had 29 points for Poly, which pulled to within 55-51 with 1:06 left on two free throws by Cesar Reyes. But Clarence Williams got a basket and Cole contributed a three-point play.
Sylmar will meet Garfield in Friday’s 8 p.m. final at Roybal. The Spartans haven’t won a title since 1998.
