Boys’ basketball: Alemany wins championship in Hawaii but big matchups ahead

Alemany took a business trip to Hawaii this week and came away with a championship trophy in Maui after defeating Edison, 58-47, in the championship game.
DJ McDonald scored 25 points to help Alemany improve to 8-2. The Warriors’ only losses are to No. 1-ranked Sierra Canyon and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd.
The big challenge comes next week in the Damien tournament. The Warriors open against Corona Centennial in a 4 p.m. game at Damien on Monday. It’s a great Gold Division that also features another terrific matchup: Oak Park vs. Birmingham at 10 a.m.
Oak Park defeated Ventura, 78-48, to improve to 8-4. Riley Battin had 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Also this week, Westlake defeated Simi Valley, 75-69, in over time. Adam Hess scored 18 points.
Santa Margarita advanced to Friday’s championship game of its own tournament with an 83-80 win over Taft. Santa Margarita plays St. Augustine.
Bishop O’Dowd defeated Crespi, 68-50. Russell Stong had 15 points for the Celts.
Peninsula defeated Gardena Serra, 77-57. Nick Frasso scored 20 points and Blake Godbold added 19 points.
