Basketball: City Section approves new Open Division
The City Section’s Board of Managers approved on Monday the creation of new eight-team Open Divisions for the boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs effective this season.
It will be patterned similar to the Southern Section’s Open Division. A committee will select the eight-best teams regardless of their division at the conclusion of the season. A maximum of one team can be selected from Division II, III, IV or V. Most will come from Division I.
It’s designed to help prevent 80-point blowouts in first-round playoff games.
A survey of coaches revealed 86% approval for the Open Division.
