There were several assistant general managers on hand on Friday at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame to watch the individual duel between Chaminade’s Blake Rutherford, one of the top senior pro prospects, and Notre Dame’s Hunter Greene, one of the top junior prospects.
Both are UCLA commits. Greene struck out Rutherford in the first inning looking. Rutherford reached on an error in his next at-bat and then he sent a Greene fastball flying over the right-field fence for a two-run home run in the fifth inning of Chaminade’s 3-0 Mission League victory.
The Eagles (14-7, 9-3) received six shutout innings from Aidan Dolan, who allowed three hits. Sean Sullivan finished up.
It was a huge three-game sweep for Chaminade over Notre Dame. And considering the Eagles didn’t use their No. 1 pitcher, Tommy Costello, all week, it points to their improving pitching depth. Costello, who had elbow surgery and missed his freshman year, is being rested on the mound.
Greene struck out eight in six innings. Notre Dame suffered two shutout losses to the Eagles and dropped to 5-7 in league play.
Chaminade, battling Loyola for first place in the Mission League, finishes off with three-game series against Alemany and Crespi.
