After early season distractions, Fremont is focused on winning league title

Before the basketball season began, Fremont High was supposed to be one of the top teams in the City Section. But its coach was dismissed early in the season, two starters were declared ineligible and distractions were many.

Former Fremont three-sport standout Danny Williams, 31, has settled in as the new coach, guiding the Pathfinders to an 11-3 record since taking over on Dec. 7. It was a game against Crenshaw. Williams had been the girls coach. Two players fouled out. Fremont suffered a 15-point defeat.

Fremont is set to play Crenshaw again Tuesday at Fremont to perhaps decide the Coliseum League championship. Fremont is 11-7 and 5-1 in league. Crenshaw is unbeaten in league.

“I feel way more confident,” Williams said. “We’re just worried about basketball.”

Fremont has one of the top sophomores in the City Section in 6-foot-4 Chris Page and a solid senior point guard in Christopher Bradford.

Fremont probably will be a Division I playoff team, something Williams has been using to motivate his players.

“We’re looking toward the playoffs,” he said. “We haven’t been worrying about our past.”

Fremont has four games scheduled this week, trying to make up games because of the teachers’ strike, including consecutive games against View Park Prep.
