Dodgers reach agreement with Brian Wilson on 1-year, $10-million deal

The Dodgers on Thursday fortified the back end of the bullpen, reaching an agreement on a new deal with Brian Wilson.

Wilson’s one-year contract is worth $10 million and includes a player option for a second season, according to a person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal is pending a physical examination.

The player option is worth $8.5 million to $10 million, depending on how many appearances he makes next season. Wilson can earn an additional $700,000 each year in performance-based incentives based on games finished.

Wilson wanted to close, but made an exception to return to the Dodgers, who already have a closer in Kenley Jansen. Wilson’s agent, Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group, informed the Dodgers he would be open to setting up for Jansen again, provided they paid him like a closer.

By agreeing to one-year deal, Wilson can increase his value and reenter the free-agent market next winter.

The former San Francisco Giants closer missed most of last season recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery. He signed with the Dodgers for $1 million and posted a 0.66 earned-run average in 18 games.
